United States Supreme Court
Courts must defer to a federal agency's reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous statute the agency is charged with administering. (Overruled by Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo in 2024.)
Chevron established the doctrine of "Chevron deference," requiring courts to accept a federal agency's reasonable statutory interpretation when Congress has not directly addressed the question at issue. The doctrine was overruled in 2024 by Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo.
